30 Years of TCP/IP

On january 1st 1983, TCP (Transmission Control Protocol) was made the default protocol for network communication on the ARPAnet. TCP replaced NCP which had been the primary protocol since 1969. At the time, about 400 hosts were connected to the network. Today, connected devices are estimated to number over one billion (ISC Survey).

ISNIC maintained a hostcount between 1990 and 2010 for registered hosts. Starting in 1990 with 14 hosts - up to 300 thousand in 2010 when we stopped counting! (ISNIC Survey).
